KUDLA WINS B18s IN
THREE-HOUR SLUGFEST
In a marathon lasting three hours, Denis Kudla [4]
(USA) prevailed over Marton Fucsovics [3] (HUN) in three
tough sets to win the B18s singles championship 6-7(4),
6-4, 6-4.
Kudla, who has been playing this tournament since he was
nine years old, was elated to capture his first Eddie
Herr crystal globe trophy. “I was thinking about how
awesome it would be to win this tournament. There are
some great players who have won this before; this gives
me confidence to go on and do well as a pro.”
The champ said he knew Fucsovics “wasn’t playing his
best and just a few points made the difference in the
match.”

GAVRILOVA CROWNED G18s
CHAMP
Daria Gavrilova [3] (RUS) overcame a first set loss to
defeat Di Zhao [WC] (CHN) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and capture the
2009 Eddie Herr G18s singles crown.
After losing the first set, Gavrilova, who had never
seen Zhao before this tournament, began to employ a
variety of speeds and spins in an attempt to keep her
opponent off balance and disrupt her rhythm. The tactic
worked; as the match progressed, more errors crept into
Zhao’s game. Gavrilova ultimately prevailed to take the
match and the title.
After the match Gavrilova, who is only 15, said she is
“very excited” to have her name added for a second time
to the list of Eddie Herr champions. She won the Eddie
Herr G14 singles title in 2008.

VICKERY LIVES UP TO NUMBER ONE SEEDING, WINS G16s
Sacha Vickery [1] (USA) regrouped after losing the
first set to emerge victorious over Caitlyn Williams [5]
(USA) 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to earn the G16s singles crown. The
champ said. “I knew she [Williams] was a good player and
a crafty player. I’m very proud of myself. I kept
fighting and held my nerves to the end.”
When asked what this win means to her, Vickery replied,
“Winning the Eddie Herr means a lot to me. It feels
awesome to be in the same category with Sharapova and
the other great players who have won this tournament.”
Vickery is 14 years old and was a 2007 finalist in the
G12s.
HARRINGTON OUTPLAYS HALEBIAN, WINS B16s
Hunter Harrington [7] (USA) outplayed countryman and
training partner Alexios Halebian [8] (USA) 6-2, 6-4 to
win the B16s singles championship.
“This is the biggest win I’ve ever had. It’s an honor to
win this tournament,” Harrington declared. In assessing
the match, the newly crowned champion noted that
Halebian made a few more mistakes than usual. Harrington
is very familiar with Halebian’s game, since both
players train together at the USTA Training Center and
play each other regularly.
Gracious in defeat, Halebian acknowledged, “It would be
hard to ever beat him [Harrington] if he plays this well
every time. I did have chances though, but I wasn’t able
to do anything with them.” |

LIANG TOPS DUNNE IN G14s FINAL
Spencer Liang (USA) rolled over Katy Dunne [16] (GBR)
6-2, 6-2 to secure the G14s singles championship.
“This is my first big title; I just can’t believe it,”
Liang said excitedly after the match. “But then I can
believe it, because I’ve been working so hard!”
Liang explained this is her first year at the USTA
Training Center. “I’ve been working on improving my
serve and aggressiveness – on taking the ball earlier.
And I’ve been applying those things more in matches.”
Last year at the Eddie Herr, Liang lost in the first
round of singles and doubles. “I was really
disappointed,” she said, “but I took it as a learning
experience.”
BAMBRIDGE RALLIES, DEFEATS KWAITKOWSKI TO WIN B14s
Luke Bambridge [5] (GBR) lost the first set against
Thai Kwiatkowski [13] (USA) in the B14s final Sunday,
but he would not be denied. “My opponent came out
firing, so I changed my strategy in the second set,”
Bambridge reflected after the match, “and I started
making balls.”
“Then he [Kwaitkowski] got frustrated,” Bambridge said,
“I think he started feeling the pressure and that was
the difference.”
Bambridge went on, “It feels great to win such a great
tournament at such a great venue!”
The first set of the match was the only set Bambridge
lost throughout the entire tournament. He won the
championship 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. |
