UPSETS MARK OPENING
ACTION IN G18s.

Two seeds were upset by
qualifiers in the first round of girls 18s competition
Monday. Mary Clayton [Q] (USA) persevered over Camila
Silva [4] (CHI) 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) and Belinda Niu [Q]
(USA) took out Irina Khromacheva [9] (RUS) in straight
sets 6-4, 6-3.
In an interesting turn of events, Daneika Borthwick [Q]
(GBR) faced Tamara Bizhukova [LL] (RUS) in the first
round of the main draw. The two had met the day before
in the final round of the G18s qualifying tournament,
with Borthwick registering a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win. The
tables turned in the rematch; this time Bizhukova came
away with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory.
In a matchup of former Eddie Herr champions, 2007 G12s
champ Madison Keys (USA) dismissed Anna Orlik (BLR) 6-3,
6-3. Orlik won the Eddie Herr G12s in 2005 and the G14s
in 2006.
In other action, Estelle Cascino (Q), last year’s Eddie
Herr G12s singles champ still not been challenged in the
G14s. After losing only a total of seven games in the
qualies, Cascino continues to breeze through the
competition with a first round 6-1, 6-0 main draw
victory over Rhoda Tanui (KEN).
