Domijan Reigns Over Number One Seed
Alex Domijan [14] (USA) took
out Yuki Bhambri [1] (IND) 6-2, 6-3 in B18s
semifinal action Saturday.
Having never faced Bhambri prior to Saturday’s
match; Domijan did not arrive on court with a
predetermined strategy. Rather, he explained, “I
just felt my way through it.” Domijan went on to
say he felt the setup of his backhand to
Bhambri’s forehand shaped the outcome of the
match. His big serve didn’t hurt either;
although Bhambri had break points, Domijan was
never broken.
His victory over Bhambri earned Domijan a spot
in Sunday’s B18s final, where he will play Julen Uriguen (GUA).

Uriguen Upsets Kudla;
Advances to Finals
In match longer and more
grueling than the score indicates, unseeded
Julen Uriguen (GUA) upset Denis Kudla [16] (USA)
6-4, 6-2 in Saturday’s B18s semifinal. Uriguen,
who endured a long three-setter in the previous
round, said he felt he “played really well” and
“made the important points when I needed to.”
In Sunday’s final, he will compete against Alex
Domijan [14] (USA) to decide the 2008 Eddie Herr
B18s Single Champion. Uriguen says he hopes to
serve well in the final and make his opponent
hit a lot of balls. The two last met at Junior
Davis Cup in Canada, where Domijan prevailed in
straight sets.

Gavrilova and
Echeverria to Play for G14 Title
|

Nadia Echeverria Alam [Q] (USA) G14 |
Gavrilova Continues to Live Up to Her
Seeding
Daria Gavrilova [1] (RUS) turned in a
6-3, 6-3 win over Patricia Martins [9] (POR)
in the G14s semifinal match. The
number one seed has not lost a set on
her march to the G14s finals. Now only
Nadia Echeverria Alam [Q] (USA) stands
between her and the 2008 G14s singles
title. Gavrilova and Alam will battle
Sunday for the championship.
Qualifier Echeverria Reaches Finals of
G14s
Nadia Echeverria Alam’s [Q] (USA) string
of upsets continued with her 6-3,
6-0 wallop of Victoria Duval [5] (USA)
in the other G14s semifinal Saturday. Alam,
who is 13, credits her victory to her
increased fitness and mental toughness,
which she says are the products of
training with Tarik Benhabiles. Alam
believes she “has the confidence to
overcome any tough situation.” She will
carry that belief to tomorrow’s final
against Daria Gavrilova [1] (RUS). “I
will play my best game and always stay
focused,” she declared.
Alam says it “feels amazing” to make it
to the finals. This will be her first
final of an international tournament. |
Embree to Face
Watson in G18s Final

Lauren Embree [9] (USA) |
Embree
Dismisses Oyen
It’s off to the finals for Lauren Embree
[9] (USA), who beat Sophie Oyen (BEL)
6-4, 6-3 Saturday in the other G18s
semifinal match. Embree, who has yet to
lose a set in the tournament, has not
been threatened thus far. She hopes to
continue her winning ways and claim the
G18s singles title against unseeded
Heather Watson (GBR) on Sunday.

Heather Watson (GBR) |
Watson
Upsets Diyas in Three
Unseeded Heather Watson (GBR) outlasted
the number three seed Saturday in G18s
semifinal play. By toughing out a 3-6,
6-4, 6-4 semifinal victory over Zarina
Diyas [3] (KAZ), Watson assured her
place in Sunday’s final against Lauren
Embree [9] (USA). No stranger to ousting
seeds in long, tough matches, Watson
previously achieved a close second round three-set
win over the number two seed.
Commenting on her win over Diyas, Watson
said, “She was a great player. I just
tried not to give away one point,
because one point could be the
difference [in the match].” Looking
ahead to Sunday, she noted, “I worked
really hard on my fitness prior to Eddie
Herr. I still have fight left in me for
tomorrow.” |
