Tuesday was a good day for
number one seeds and qualifiers
Top seed Robson scores easy first round win in
G18s.
Although she couldn’t find her championship form,
Laura Robson [1] (GBR) managed to make short work of
Brooke Bolender (USA) in today’s opening round of
play in G18s. Playing before a large crowd, Robson
defeated Bolender 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the second
round.
Although most seeds advanced, the G18s division saw
a number of upsets. Chantal Skamlova (SVK) upset
Richel Hogenkamp [5] (NED) 6-4, 6-3 and Monika
Tumova (CZE) registered a 6-4, 7-5 win over Karina
Pimkina [13] (RUS). It was also good day for
qualifiers in that division; Nadezda Guskova (Q) (RUS)
upset Bianca Swanepoel [15] (RSA) 6-4, 7-6(1), Maria
Belaya (Q) (USA) dismissed Mishel Kenin (RUS) 6-1,
6-1, and Courtney Dolehide (Q) (USA) scored a 6-1,
6-3 victory over Andrea Konjuh (CRO).
Bhambri needs three sets to advance in B18s
In the first round of the B18s, Yuki Bhambri [1] (IND)
withstood a challenge by Mikhail Biryukov (RUS) and
ultimately prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Five other B18
seeds didn’t fare as well. Ryan Lipman [6] (USA) was
outdone 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 by Stanislav Poplavskyy (UKR);
Adrein Puget [7] (FRA) sent Harry Fowler (USA) home
6-3, 6-3; Nikoloz Basilashvili (Q) (USA) upset Blaz
Rola [9] (SLO) 6-3, 6-1; Devin Britton (USA) dashed
the hopes of Karim Maamoun [10] (EGY) 6-4, 7-6 (5);
and James Chaudry (GBR) out dueled Shichi Sekiguchi
[11] (JPN) 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Top seeds advance in 16s
The number one seeds in the boys and girls 16s
advanced in straight sets today: Eugenie Bouchard
(1) (CAN) defeated Zane Zarina (LAT) 6-2, 6-0 and
Raymond Sarmiento (1) (USA) beat Joseph J Cohen (GBR)
6-1, 6-3.
Tyler Gardiner [1] (USA) and Daria Gavrilova [1] (RUS),
the top seeds in the boys and girls14s,
respectively, both received first round byes. G14
qualifiers made an impact on the draw today, scoring
a total of five upsets; winners included Joy Yaich
(Q) (FRA), Kristina Sanjevic (Q) CAN, Viktoriya
Lavrentyeva (Q) (RUS), Charlotte Pearce (Q) GBR, and
Alyza Benotto-Wood (Q) USA.
