Play Begins in Boys and Girls
12s; Several Seeds Fall
Competition in the boys and
girls 12s got underway Saturday, as 128 players in each division
began their quest toward the Eddie Herr singles title. By
the end of opening day, championship hopes were dashed for
several seeds, as upsets were registered in both the boys
and girls divisions.
In the girls division, Kim Kermet (USA) defeated Lenka
Kuncikova [1] (CZE) 6-4, 6-3; Denise Starr (USA) outlasted
Darya Lebeshava [1] (BLR) 7-5, 2-6, 6-4; and Nikki
Kallenberg (USA) prevailed over Simone Pratt [1] (BAH) 4-6,
7-5, 6-3.
In boys action, Jayden Novatscou’s [1] (AUS) tournament was
ended by American Jose Gracia 6-3, 6-1.
Seeding in the 12s is based on order of merit from the player’s
national federation; as a result all seeds in 12s draws are
all listed as [1].
Hopefuls from Around the
World Converge at Eddie Herr Qualies
On November 22, several
hundred juniors from around the world converged at the
qualies of the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis
Championships in hopes of playing their way into the main
draw. Over the next few days, hopefuls in boys and girls
14s, 16s, and 18s will rely on arsenals of shots, strategy,
and sheer determination to advance them toward a spot in the
main draw of their respective divisions. Eight players in
each division will qualify for the coveted positions.
