Upsets Mark Wednesday’s Singles Action

Eddie Herr championship hopes ended abruptly Wednesday for several seeds, including the number two, three, and four seeds in B18. Of the top four seeds in that division, only number one seed Uladzimir Ignatik (BLR) lived up to his seeding with a dominating 6-1; 6-1 performance over Xander Spong (NED).

Wednesday was a big day for underdogs at the Eddie Herr International. American Chase Buchanan [WC] stunned B18 Ricardas Berankis [2] (LTU), handing him a 6-2; 4-6; 7-6(3) defeat, Alex Domijan (Q) (USA) eliminated Roman Jebavy [3] (CZE) in two close sets, 6-4; 7-6(5), and Aussie wild card Matt Reid dismissed Ricardo Urzua [4] (CHI), 6-2, 6-1.

G14 Laura Robson GBR

In G18s, Ksenia Pervak [2] (RUS) scored a 6-2; 6-1 victory over lucky loser Maryna Zanevska (UKR). Mallory Cecil (10) USA got a scare from Carling Seguso [WC] (USA); however, Cecil ultimately outlasted Seguso 6-4; 4-6; 7-6(1) in a long and hotly contested battle.

The number one G16 seed, Viktorya Yemialyanova (BLR) advanced 6-4; 6-1 over Victoria Lozano (MEX), but the morning didn’t go as well for her counterpart in the B16 division. Julen Uriguen [1] (GUA) was upset by Jose Silva, Jr. (BRA) 6-4; 7-5.

The tournament also ended today for the G16 number five and six seeds. Silvia Njiric (CRO) scored a 7-6(6); 6-2 victory over Natalia Pintusava [5] (BLR) and Jennifer Ren (GBR) sent Lauren Herring [6] (USA) packing, 6-2, 6-0. In other G16 action, Venezuelan Daniela Vidal endured a grueling four-hour 2-6; 7-5; 6-4 ordeal against Liana Todorova (BUL) to stay alive in the singles draw.

No major upsets marked play in the B14s. Damien David [2] (CAN) delivered a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stansilav Aleksandrov (BUL), Christian Harrison [3] (USA) got the best of Jose Martinez (USA) 7-5; 6-4, and Diego Hildago [5] (ECU) crushed Van Damrongsri [Q] (USA) 6-0; 6-1.

In G14s, Laura Robson [1] (GBR) beat Riko Shimizu (USA) 6-1; 6-2 and Annie Mulholland [2] (USA) defeated Natalia Maynette [Q] (USA) 6-0; 6-2. The division was not without an upset; however, as Kim Twelker [4] (GER) went down to Barbora Lazarova (SVK) 6-3; 6-2.

Semi-finals in the 12s are scheduled for Thursday morning; the boys play at 9:00 and the girls at 10:00 am. Play in all divisions continues Thursday.
