Tomic Advances to Second Round

In a match marked by deep baseline rallies, 14 year-old wild card Bernard Tomic (AUS) advanced to the second round of the Boys 18s at the Eddie Herr this afternoon 6-4, 4-6, ret. after his opponent, 10th seed Dennis Lajola (USA), was unable to begin the third set.

Tomic out-steadied Lajola to break at 3-4 and eventually take the first set 6-4. Lajola broke in the opening game of the second set, and again in the third game to go ahead 3-0. Tomic then broke and held, but was never able erase the second break, losing the second set 6-4.

Lajola retired after the second set, citing lingering symptoms from a previous concussion.
