Tomic Advances to Second
Round

In a match marked by deep
baseline rallies, 14 year-old wild card Bernard Tomic (AUS) advanced to
the second round of the Boys 18s at the Eddie Herr this afternoon 6-4,
4-6, ret. after his opponent, 10th seed Dennis Lajola (USA), was unable
to begin the third set.
Tomic out-steadied Lajola to break at 3-4 and eventually take the first
set 6-4. Lajola broke in the opening game of the second set, and again
in the third game to go ahead 3-0. Tomic then broke and held, but was
never able erase the second break, losing the second set 6-4.
Lajola retired after the second set, citing lingering symptoms from a
previous concussion.

Sharapova and Tommy Haas.
The 2006 boys and girls singles winners in each division will receive an
Eddie Herr hat autographed by Maria Sharapova and Tommy Haas. In addition, if the
Rising Star and Glenn Feldman Sportsmanship Awards are bestowed this
year, those winners will also receive an autographed hat.
Both of the tour pros have been practicing at IMG Academies/NBTA this
week. Sharapova was the 2000 Eddie Herr Girls 16s champion and recipient
of the Rising Star Award. Haas also competed in the event as a junior.
