Seven Former Champions Advance at Eddie Herr International

Tamaryn Hendler

In singles action today, seven former Eddie Herr champions kept their hopes alive of becoming only the second two-time singles champion in the history of the tournament.

Four former champions are still contending in the Girls 18s:

Michelle Larcher de Brito (POR) 2005 G16 Champion
Tamaryn Hendler (BEL) 2005 G14 Champion
Madison Brengle (USA) 2004 G16 Champion
Sorana Cirstea (ROM) 2003 G14 Champion

In today's Girls 18s action, gritty 13 year-old Larcher de Brito (WC) imposed her will over 10th seed Jade Curtis (GBR) 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2 in a duel that lasted more than two hours. Hendler gained a straight sets victory over American Melanie Oudin 6-3, 7-5. Ninth seed Brengle wasted no time in defeating fellow American Mallory Burdette (WC) 6-1, 6-2 and Cirstea won 6-3, 7-6(2) over Karina Pimkina (RUS).

Hanna Orlik (3) (BLR), the 2005 Eddie Herr G12 champion, advanced to the round of 16 in Girls 14s with a 6-2, 6-2 win over wild card Chi Chi Scholl (USA).

Two former champions are still alive in the boys divisions. Alex Domijian (USA), the 2005 B14 champion, continued his winning ways in B16s competition today, upsetting David Thurner [12] (GER) 6-3, 6-0. In the B14s, last year's B12 champion Emmet Egger [10] (USA) got the better of Agustin Portis (ARG) 7-6(3), 7-5.

Only Anna Kournikova has won the Eddie Herr twice, capturing the G14s in 1993 and returning the following year to take the G18s honors.
