Chekhov and Bester to Face Off in B18s Semis in Reprise of 2002 B14 Finals

Could it be deja vu all over again? Tomorrow's B18 semi-final match featuring Pavel Chekhov [4] (RUS) versus Philip Bester (WC) (CAN) has all the makings of a repeat of their exciting and fiercely contended 2002 B14 finals encounter in which Chekhov prevailed 7-6(5); 3-6; 7-6(2). In 2002, as today, Chekhov was seeded and Bester was a wild card. Today, as in 2002, Bester toppled several high seeds before meeting up with Pavel; this year he has taken out the 2004 B16 champion, Kellen Damico [2], and Roberto Maytin [9], in 2002 he dismissed Plamen Avramov (2) (BUL) and Donald Young [8} (USA).

Slated for Saturday at 11:00 am, this match is sure to be a crowd favorite.

Nicolas Santos [1] (BRA) and Rasid Winklaar (AHO) will vie in the other B18 semi-final, also at 11:00 am on Saturday. Santos recorded a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Roman Jebavy [5] (CZE) in the quarters; Winklaar gained a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over American qualifier Jeff Dadamo.

In B16 quarterfinal action, Alex Domijan (USA) earned a tough upset over Gilad Ben Zvi [14] (ISR) to secure a spot in the semis. He will meet Devin Britton [10] (USA) who took out Giorgio Portaluri (ITA) 6-3, 6-3. Ilija Vucic [3] and Grigor Dimitrov [2] will contend in the other B14 semi match; both semis will begin Saturday at 9:30 am.

David Schulz [11] (GER) topped Jarryd Chaplin [13] (AUS) 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-4 in the B14 quarterfinals; he'll face Ashot Khacharyan [5] (RUS) in the semis. Khacharyan had a much easier time in his quarterfinal match, defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. Yasutaka Uchiyama [3] (JPN) will take on Federico Gaio [9] (ITA) in the other semi in this division. Uchiyama beat Joao Fernandes [6] (BRA) 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters; Gaio upset Denis Kudla [2] (USA) 6-2, 6-2.

Semi-final matches in B14 are Saturday at 8:00 am.
