defeat Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Edward Nguyen 6-0, 0-6, 6-3 and
capture the 12s Mixed Doubles honors.
Chekhov and
Bester to Face Off in B18s Semis in Reprise of 2002 B14 Finals
Could it be deja vu all over again? Tomorrow's B18 semi-final
match featuring Pavel Chekhov [4] (RUS) versus Philip Bester
(WC) (CAN) has all the makings of a repeat of their exciting and
fiercely contended 2002 B14 finals encounter in which Chekhov
prevailed 7-6(5); 3-6; 7-6(2). In 2002, as today, Chekhov was
seeded and Bester was a wild card. Today, as in 2002, Bester
toppled several high seeds before meeting up with Pavel; this
year he has taken out the 2004 B16 champion, Kellen Damico [2],
and Roberto Maytin [9], in 2002 he dismissed Plamen Avramov (2)
(BUL) and Donald Young [8} (USA).
Slated for Saturday at 11:00 am, this match is sure to be a
crowd favorite.
Nicolas Santos [1] (BRA) and Rasid Winklaar (AHO) will vie in
the other B18 semi-final, also at 11:00 am on Saturday. Santos
recorded a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Roman Jebavy [5] (CZE) in the
quarters; Winklaar gained a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over American
qualifier Jeff Dadamo.
In B16 quarterfinal action, Alex Domijan (USA) earned a tough
upset over Gilad Ben Zvi [14] (ISR) to secure a spot in the
semis. He will meet Devin Britton [10] (USA) who took out
Giorgio Portaluri (ITA) 6-3, 6-3. Ilija Vucic [3] and Grigor
Dimitrov [2] will contend in the other B14 semi match; both
semis will begin Saturday at 9:30 am.
David Schulz [11] (GER) topped Jarryd Chaplin [13] (AUS) 7-6(7),
4-6, 6-4 in the B14 quarterfinals; he'll face Ashot Khacharyan
[5] (RUS) in the semis. Khacharyan had a much easier time in his
quarterfinal match, defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) 6-3,
4-6, 6-0. Yasutaka Uchiyama [3] (JPN) will take on Federico Gaio
[9] (ITA) in the other semi in this division. Uchiyama beat Joao
Fernandes [6] (BRA) 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters; Gaio upset Denis
Kudla [2] (USA) 6-2, 6-2.
Semi-final matches in B14 are Saturday at 8:00 am.
Cirstea Ends Larcher de
Brito's Hopes, Will Face Hendler in Semis

After losing
the first set, Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea [2] (ROM) rallied
to defeat Michelle Larcher de Brito (WC) (POR) 4-6, 6-2,
7-5 in the quarterfinals of the G18s Friday. She will
face Tamaryn Hendler (BEL) in the semi-finals. Hendler
upset Kimberly Couts [13] (USA) 6-2, 6-2 to earn the
semi-final spot.
The other G18 semi-final match pits Anastasia Pivovarova
[8] (RUS) against Urszula Radwanska [4] (POL).
Pivovarova advanced by defeating Katerina Kramperova
[14] (CZE) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Radwanska dominated Nikola
Hofmanova [6] (AUT) to secure her place in the semis.
Both G18 semi-final matches are scheduled for Saturday
at 11:00 am.
In G16 action, Tanya Raykova [1] had an easy 6-1, 6-1
win over Naomi Broady (GBR); Ester Goldfield ended Mary
Clayton's (WC) (USA) tournament 6-3, 6-4. Raykova and
Goldfield will face off in a semi-final match. The other
semi-final contest features Yasmin Clarke [14] (GBR) and
Nicole Bartnik (WC) (USA). Clarke earned her semi-final
berth by upsetting Uliana Suchkova [8] (RUS) 6-0, 6-3;
Bartnik's semi-final path was forged by a 6-3, 6-2 win
over Marianna Milchutske (LL) (USA).
Semi-final matches in the G16s are set for Saturday at
9:30 am.
Katarena Pallivets [1] (CAN) and Hanna Orlik [3] (BLR)
are set to square off in the semi-finals of G14s.
Paliivets got to the semis by toughing out a 4-6, 6-4,
6-3 quarterfinal win over Jo-Jo Sanford (USA); Orlik
found her way there by taking out Jenny Falcone (USA)
6-0, 6-4. The other semi-final in this division matches
Ajla Tomljanovic [9] (CRO) against Alina Jerjomina
(LAT). Tomljanovic scored a 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal win
over Sloane Stephens (USA); Jerjomina defeated American
Kayla Rizzolo 7-5, 6-2.
The G14 semi-finals begin Saturday at 8:00 am.
